We went out and rode the Old Cob and Co. track which used to link the Far North Coast of Queensland with the gold fields on the tablelands.

Being about an hour walk/ride up and a pretty serious ride down I tried to pack light, one body, one lens, one flash, a set of triggers and a TTL cable in a small pack. Instead of taking a light stand or my little joby tripod I relied on bungy straps as I figgured that there would always be a tree somewhere and I even used my bike as a stand at one point.

Really happy with the shots and I've got a few more ideas for next time.

I was super happy with myself managing to ride the entire 'happy line' or main set of jumps, not bad for an old bloke, but the younger lads really threw down.

Even though the sun was still high I thought I might have enough flash power compete with the sun quite early in the afternoon, the results were far better than I expected.

Strobist: 2x Kf36 flashes, full power camera right on 6 foot stands, full power, no modifer.

I really have to credit this photo to Zane Caldera, as I asked him to do this same trick 4 times until I got my timing and settings just right, after I showed him the preview on the back of the camera I don't think he minded at all.

Again I persisted with my 'rider in the landscape' theme this time I managed to get back a lot further and hide the flashes quite well, I really wanted to run a soft box to soften the light be couldn't do it with limited space between the take off and landing, I think I'm getting closer to the idea in my head but I don't think location is quite suited for it.

Strobist:1x kf36 slight behind rider full power 1x kf36 slight infront of rider 1/2 power, no modifers.

All up I'm really happy with the day, I got a bunch more 'good' shots but these really stood out.

Rider in the landscape - take 2

So some of the guys pop around and rode the little quarter pipe that I'd dug for myself near my house, some surprisingly good riding went down and it gave me a chance to work on my 'rider in the landscape' idea again.

In retrospect I was a bit too close to the rider and the flash was too close to the camera but I'm getting closer to the idea in my head.

Let there be wind

Had a great session out with Kyle Wright, good wind, low tide that let me move around.

tried a new technique with the flash, basically i had it on a camera bracket fired with a ettl cable, flash set to ttl +2ev, the camera locked at 1/250 and what ever f-stop would get me about -1 ev ambient.

I think i got some great results, and i was quite suprised at how far the flash carrier considering the ambient light.

I Used to heavely be into the BMX and Mountain Bike scene and I was really excited to have the chance to shoot some of our top local riders.

I had a few ideas of what I wanted to achive before I set up, and that was I wanted to get a few classic magazine type shots, bright-sharp-big. As well as some "riders in the landscape" type photos>

In the end I got pretty close to both but didn't really nail either, but I'm more than happy with the results.

Thanks to Beau and Zane for a great shoot.

This first shot was just one of many tests to try and get the levels sorted, it work quite well but in the end I had to change the setup totally as I couldn't control the ambient light to 'stop' the action in some later shots. this was done with a cactus KF36 and a Cactus V4 trigger, I had to revert to a TTL cable and hi-speed sync on a canon 580exii to get closer to what I wanted.

More Wet Season Strobist fun

Had another quick chance to get in some shots between rain squalls.

The creek was up so the boys got their flip on.

I really needed a faster shutter speed here, the sync of 1/250th really couldn't capture the action without motion blur and it was too bright for the flash to freeze the action.
